Give a Girl a Break

Released on January 1, 1954 by MGM.  Music by Burton Lane.  Lyrics by Ira Gershwin.  Screenplay by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich, based on a story by Vera Caspary.  Directed by Stanley Donen.  Produced by Jack Cummings.  Cast included Marge Champion, Gower Champion, Debbie Reynolds, Helen Wood, and Bob Fosse.

Stanley Donen’s entertaining musical, filmed between his highly successful SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN and SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS, is a behind-the-scenes story of three actresses vying for the same role in a new Broadway show.  Besides giving rare film roles to the dance team of Marge and Gower Champion, GIVE A GIRL A BREAK also provided an early film appearance for the soon-to-be legendary Bob Fosse.  The brisk songs by Burton Lane and Ira have been as neglected as the movie.
