Show

Lady, Be Good!

Opened at the Liberty Theatre in New York on December 1, 1924. 330 performances. Music and lyrics by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin. Book by Guy Bolton and Fred Thompson. Directed by Felix Edwards. Dances staged by Sammy Lee. Produced by Alex A. Aarons and Vinton Freedley. Cast included Fred and Adele Astaire, Walter Catlett, Cliff Edwards, Alan Edwards, and Kathlene Martyn, with Phil Ohman and Victor Arden at the pianos.

Fred and Adele Astaire played Dick and Susie Trevor, penniless siblings evicted from their Rhode Island mansion. Dick is determined to marry the wealthy Josephine Vanderwater in order to return to solvency, but Susie is equally determined to save Dick from a loveless marriage by posing as a Spanish widow in order to claim a substantial inheritance. This show was the first hit that George and Ira enjoyed together and its reception, on the heels of George's RHAPSODY IN BLUE earlier that year, made stars of them both.
