June 6, 2016
Ira GershwinToday, we begin a new feature on the official George and Ira Gershwin website. This blog is intended to provide up-to-date news and information about current activities in the Gershwin world, as well as features with a historical bent.
For this first posting, we thought you might like to know about an article by Ted Gioia (author of How to Listen to Jazz) just published in The Atlantic. The Year American Speech Became Art posits that “America’s most lasting contribution to world culture” was the rise, during the 1920s, of a uniquely American English. The author credits Ira Gershwin for capturing the rhythms of the time in his lyrics.
