“Rhythm Is Gonna Get You”: Gershwin Prize Celebrates the Music of Emilio and Gloria Estefan

March 25, 2019

On May 3, 2019, PBS will broadcast the awarding of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song to two of the most popular entertainers and songwriters of the past thirty years: Emilio and Gloria Estefan.

The honorees were celebrated with a concert in their honor, held on March 13 at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, DC, and hosted by Rita Moreno and Andy Garcia. The evening’s performers included the Estefans themselves, their daughter Emily, and their friends José Feliciano, Patti Labelle, Gian Marco, Cyndi Lauper, Fernando Varela, violinist Sarah Chang, and the cast of the award-winning Broadway musical On Your Feet!

The Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, which celebrates artists “recognized for entertaining and informing audiences, for drawing upon the acknowledged foundations of popular song, and for inspiring new generations of performers on their own professional journeys,” began in 2007, with a concert honoring Paul Simon.

Check your local listings for the station and time of the broadcast in your area and get ready to get on your feet and “Conga”!
